The International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) has awarded the 2025 Committee of National Societies (CNS) Medal to the Asociación Mexicana de Metabolismo Óseo y Mineral A.C. (AMMOM). Dr. Vázquez Alanís, current President, accepted the honour on behalf of AMMOM, in recognition of the society’s longstanding commitment to the IOF and its significant contributions to osteoporosis awareness and bone health in Mexico. The prestigious CNS award was presented at a special session of the World Congress on Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis, and Musculoskeletal Diseases in Rome, Italy.
AMMOM, a member of the IOF CNS since it was founded in 1998, is honoured for its major contributions to the Foundation over the past 27 years. The award also celebrates AMMOM’s extraordinary efforts in raising osteoporosis awareness, advancing education, and advocating for better bone health in Mexico and across Latin America.
The IOF Committee of National Societies (CNS): The world’s largest network for osteoporosis
The CNS comprises over 340 organizations across 152 countries and territories, making it the largest global network of national and international organizations dedicated to osteoporosis and musculoskeletal disorders. CNS members, often volunteers, play a pivotal role in raising awareness, influencing policy, and improving patient care on a national level.
AMMOM: A legacy of collaborative success with IOF
AMMOM has been an active and dedicated member of the CNS, collaborating extensively with the IOF on a wide range of operations both globally and within Latin America. AMMOM’s leadership is highly active in IOF’s governance, with key figures such as Prof. Patricia Clark, IOF Board member; Prof. Jorge Morales Torres, IOF Board and Committee of Scientific Advisors (CSA) member; Victor Mercado Cardenas, IOF Regional Advisory Council LATAM member, Prof. Fidencio Cons Molina, CSA member, and Prof. Francisco Torres Naranjo, member of Capture the Fracture® (CTF) Governance.
In the past five years, AMMOM and IOF have partnered on numerous initiatives, including joint virtual scientific meetings, the IOF Latin American Audit 2021, and IOF sessions at the Congreso Mexicano de Osteoporosis y Enfermedades Metabólicas Óseas (most recently in 2024). AMMOM was also instrumental in organizing the 2nd Legislative Forum on comprehensive osteoporotic fracture prevention in Mexico, where IOF’s CEO provided a global perspective on secondary fracture prevention.
Moreover, AMMOM has played a vital role in the success of IOF’s Capture the Fracture® initiative in Latin America, making significant strides in Mexico through activities such as the FLS Café sessions, the IOF Tour, and the launch of the Mexico National Coalition for Secondary Fracture Prevention. AMMOM has also been an active partner in patient-focused initiatives, including annual meetings, a dedicated patient website (www.osteoporosismexico.org), the #HuesosMasSanos social media campaign, and World Osteoporosis Day (WOD) events. AMMOM was recognized with the Best WOD Communication Campaign award for its collaboration on the ‘That’s Osteoporosis’ campaign, which featured several patient stories from Mexico.
