At the opening of the World Congress on Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis & Musculoskeletal Diseases in Rome, Italy, on April 10th, the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) honoured Professor Atsushi Suzuki, Chair of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism at Fujita Health University School of Medicine, Japan, with the IOF President’s Award.
The esteemed award recognizes individuals for their significant and enduring contributions to advancing the mission of the IOF, through furthering one or more of the Foundation's mission statements and/or goals.
Professor Nicholas Harvey, IOF President, presented the award at the opening of the Congress: "I am deeply honoured to present the IOF President’s Award to Professor Atsushi Suzuki, a highly esteemed colleague and a globally recognized researcher and educator. The award acknowledges his exceptional contributions to IOF, including through his roles as a member of the IOF Board of Governance and the IOF Committee of Scientific Advisors. Additionally, Professor Suzuki has shared his expertise as an engaged member of the Capture the Fracture® Governance and as a mentor, underscoring his dedication to secondary fracture prevention both in Japan and around the world. We are profoundly grateful for his significant support and dedication to improving care for people with osteoporosis and fragility fractures worldwide."
Professor Suzuki stated: "It is a great honour to receive the IOF President's Award. This recognition is not solely my own but a reflection of the dedication and collaboration of physicians, research collaborators, and healthcare staff who have worked with me in the fight against osteoporosis. About Professor Atsushi Suzuki
Professor Suzuki is currently Chair of the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, Fujita Health University School of Medicine, Toyoake, Japan. After graduating from Nagoya University School of Medicine and completing his fellowship in Internal Medicine, Endocrinology and Metabolism, and Diabelotogy, Professor Suzuki obtained a PhD in Biochemistry from Nagoya University Graduate School of Medicine. From 1996 to 1998, he worked as post-doctoral fellow in the Division of Bone Diseases, University Hospital of Geneva, Switzerland. Since moving back to Japan he has worked as a medical doctor, researcher, and University professor, and since 2015, he has served as professor and chair of the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, Fujita Health University, School of Medicine.
Professor Suzuki is an elected member of the Committee of Scientific Advisors (CSA) and the Regional Advisory Council (Asia Pacific) of the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF). He also serves as a member of the IOF Capture the Fracture® (CTF) Governance and a mentor of CTF in Japan. He serves on the board of directors of both the Japan Osteoporosis Foundation (JOF) and Japan Osteoporosis Society (JOS), and as a councillor of the Japanese Society for Bone and Mineral Research (JSBMR), Japanese Society of Internal Medicine (JSIM), Japan Diabetes Society (JDS), Japan Endocrine Society (JES) and other Japanese scientific societies. He is also a full member of American Society of Bone and Mineral Research, Endocrine Society, American Diabetes Association, Asia Pacific Consortium on Osteoporosis, and Asian Association of the Study of Diabetes.
His research and clinical interests are focused on bone and mineral metabolism, including osteoporosis, in both basic and clinical sciences. He is an active member of committees for Liaison Services of JOS, and is a chairperson of Patients’ societies (Japanese Association of Bone Health Societies) supported by JOF. He is author of more than 150 publications in international peer-reviewed journals and is a regular speaker at regional and international conferences in the fields of endocrinology, diabetology, osteoporosis and bone and mineral metabolism.
Professor Suzuki has been awarded numerous recognitions, including the American College of Physicians (ACP) Volunteerism and Community Service Award for his work with the osteoporosis patient’s society (Nagoya Bone Health Society) in 2016, a Commendation for research in intractable diseases (rare bone diseases) from the Aichi Medical Association (AMA) in 2010, an Academic Award from the JSBMR in 2016, the IBM Faculty Award and JOS Academic Award from JOS in 2018, and the JSAI Incentive Award from the Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence (JSAI) in 2019. He serves on the Editorial Board of Journal of Bone and Mineral Metabolism, Osteoporosis and Sarcopenia, JCEM Case Reports and Endocrine Journal, and is the associate editor-in-chief of the Journal of the Japan Osteoporosis Society.
