2025 EurekAlert! Travel Awards for International Science Reporters applications now open

Early-career science journalists from Brazil and Eastern European countries may apply through May 5

Applications for the 2025 EurekAlert! Travel Awards for International Science Reporters are now open to early-career science journalists from Brazil and countries in Eastern Europe. Two winners will be selected to receive travel funding from EurekAlert! to attend the 2026 AAAS Annual Meeting, taking place February 12-14, 2026 in Phoenix, Arizona, USA. The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) is the world’s largest multidisciplinary scientific society, and the AAAS Annual Meeting brings together the international community of scientists, policymakers, educators, journalists, and science communicators to discuss cutting-edge research at the intersection of science, technology, policy, and society.  

In addition to travel funding and complimentary deluxe registration to the Meeting, winners also receive newsroom credentials to the AAAS Annual Meeting with access to news briefings, media availabilities, press receptions, and other exclusive events, offering early-career journalists the opportunities to meet and network with meeting attendees.
 
Applicants must meet these requirements to be eligible for the award: 

  • No more than five (5) years of experience as a professional science reporter or freelancer 
  • Based in the following countries:
    • Brazil
    • Bulgaria
    • Czechia
    • Estonia
    • Hungary
    • Latvia
    • Lithuania
    • Moldova
    • Poland
    • Romania
    • Slovakia
    • Ukraine
  • Meet EurekAlert!'s journalist-member eligibility guidelines 
  • Be able to obtain a visa and travel to one of the next two AAAS Annual Meetings: 
    • 2026 AAAS Annual Meeting: February 12-14, 2026, in Phoenix, Arizona, USA 
    • 2027 AAAS Annual Meeting: TBA 

Applications must include all of the following: 

  • Proof of staff employment or freelance status and length of service (five years or fewer) with an accredited news media outlet (What is an accredited news media outlet?
  • Biographical statement including a headshot/portrait photo (in preferred language or English)
  • Three (3) original, bylined science reporting work samples published between January 1, 2024, to present (no translations required)
  • Answers to two short essay questions (in preferred language or English) 
  • Optional: Letter of recommendation from an editor, senior reporter, or other journalism mentor  

Applicants who do not meet the eligibility requirements listed above and incomplete applications will not be considered for the award.
