TAMPA, Fla. (March 4, 2025) — Moffitt Cancer Center has become the first standalone cancer center in the world to open a Nikon Center of Excellence. This prestigious achievement highlights Moffitt’s commitment to cutting-edge imaging technology and groundbreaking cancer research.

Nikon Centers of Excellence are recognized worldwide for their advanced imaging capabilities and contributions to scientific innovation. With this accomplishment, Moffitt joins a distinguished group of institutions that serves as hubs for high-end microscopy, imaging techniques and technology-driven research collaborations.

“At Moffitt, we are dedicated to advancing cancer research and improving patient outcomes through innovation,” said  Greg Sawyer, Ph.D., chair of the Bioengineering Department at Moffitt. “Opening a Nikon Center of Excellence further strengthens our ability to leverage state-of-the-art imaging technology to deepen our understanding of cancer and accelerate the development of new therapies.”

The Nikon Center of Excellence will catalyze Moffitt’s role as a hub for scientific discovery, providing scientists with access to state-of-the-art imaging platforms, including live-cell and super resolution imaging systems. This partnership with Nikon brings world-class imaging capabilities to the forefront of cancer research, enabling Moffitt’s researchers to visualize cellular and molecular processes with unprecedented precision and uncover deeper insights into cancer biology and novel treatment approaches. Researchers can now design experiments in real time at a cellular level, opening a window to how cancer cells react and behave. These observations can be analyzed using machine learning and integrated mathematical oncology to better understand and potentially improve dosing in future treatments.

“Nikon’s collaboration with Moffitt Cancer Center underscores our commitment to advancing innovative research excellence within the scientific community,” said Andy Davis, director of sales at Nikon Instruments. “By partnering with Moffitt to create this center, we can help elevate their imaging and research capabilities so that they may continue their pioneering cancer research which has made them one of the finest cancer research institutions in the world. We are proud to play a part in this vital work.”

The launch of this center recognizes Moffitt’s leadership and commitment to pushing the boundaries in cancer research, with the aim of delivering the most advanced care possible to patients. By integrating innovative imaging technologies with world-class expertise, this partnership with Nikon will accelerate discoveries in cancer treatments and diagnostics that bring hope to those affected by cancer.
