Gilbert Gimm, Associate Professor, Health Administration and Policy, College of Public Health, and Debora Goetz Goldberg, Associate Professor, Health Administration and Policy, College of Public Health; Affiliate Faculty, Psychology, College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS), received funding for: “Disease Intervention Specialist Certification Program: Financing Models and Workforce Analysis to Enhance Public Health.”
Gimm will lead the development of employer cost subsidization models for the disease intervention specialist (DIS) certification program and overall performance of the project.
Goldberg will oversee the literature review on the DIS workforce and qualitative assessment of employers who hire public health workers with the DIS certification.
Gimm and Goldberg received a $149,998 grant from the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH) as a subaward from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to conduct the project. Funding began in Jan. 2025 and will end in late Sept. 2025.
Developing cost models for the certification of Disease Intervention Specialists is a critical step in standardizing the education and training of these professionals.
