DARIEN, IL — The American Academy of Sleep Medicine Foundation is proud to announce a partnership with the Howard University Medical Alumni Association to support medical students at Howard University. Through the HUMAA scholarship program, the AASM Foundation is sponsoring five scholarships, each valued at $3,000.

“By supporting medical students at Howard University, we’re empowering the next generation of medical professionals who will shape the future of health care,” said Dr. R. Nisha Aurora, president of the AASM Foundation. “We’re also hoping to inspire students to consider careers in sleep medicine and address underrepresentation in our field.”

These scholarships are available to current Howard University College of Medicine students and can be applied toward tuition, housing, or other essential expenses related to their education. Applications will be accepted through Friday, Jan. 24, 2025.

“These scholarships represent more than just financial assistance; they are a beacon of hope and encouragement for our HUCM students striving to achieve their dream of becoming physicians,” said Dr. Annette Bey, president of HUMAA and member of the HUCM class of ‘84. “When we alleviate financial barriers, we empower our talented students to focus on their education and future medical contributions. Thank you AASM Foundation for your remarkable commitment to nurturing medical education; HUMAA is honored to partner with you in this meaningful endeavor.”

This initiative aligns closely with the AASM Foundation’s longstanding commitment to fostering new talent in sleep medicine and extends its mission to support students from underrepresented backgrounds who aspire to make an impact in health care.

“By investing in these students, we aim to not only support their current educational needs but also encourage their long-term success in medicine,” Aurora added.

Recipients will be honored at a scholarship ceremony in February 2025.
