The University of São Paulo-USP’s Provost for Inclusion and Belonging is organizing the São Paulo School of Advanced Science on University, Memory and Reparation, which will take place between July 1-11, 2025, in USP’s main campus in São Paulo city, Brazil.

Reporters are invited to register for the scientific sessions and short courses, which will present state-of-the-art science and the results of new research.

The School addresses the social role of the University, not only as a platform and repository for research on the themes of memory, justice, and reparation but also as a relevant institution in these processes. The school stresses the debate on the role of the university as a safeguard of archives and collections, as an entity that interprets and makes available places of memory to society, as an institution that can promote (or obstruct) the right to memory, an institution that can carry social reparation initiatives.

The discussions at the School will benefit greatly from the participation of internationally renowned researchers as speakers, such as Gabi Dolff Bonekamper, TU Berlin (Germany), Leslé Honoré from Urban Gateways (Chicago, USA), Mandy Sanger from District Six Museum (Cape Town, South Africa), among others.

The São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) is supporting the event through its São Paulo School of Advanced Science Program (SPSAS http://espca.fapesp.br/home). The School is free of charges. Besides, FAPESP will pay for the selected participants: airfare (economy class) or ground transportation costs; daily allowances during the course; and health insurance. Some of the meals will also be provided free of charge in the University Restaurant.

Applications must be submitted between January 05-27, 2025 by filling an application form available at the school’s website. The School is expecting to select 100 students, half from Brazilian universities and half from abroad. The students must be enrolled in undergraduate or graduate programs in Brazil or abroad, but recently graduated PhDs can also be accepted. Researchers from all disciplines are invited to submit proposals to participate in the program.  Those who conduct research projects related to the concepts of memory and reparation are especially encouraged.
