Okayama, Japan- On November 21, Okayama University of Science (OUS) ranked 601+ globally among 749 universities and tied for 22nd place among the 42 Japanese universities in the Interdisciplinary Science Rankings announced by Times Higher Education (THE), a UK-based higher education publication.
This year, 42 Japanese universities, including those categorized as “Reporter,” were ranked. OUS made its debut in the rankings, tying with institutions such as Tokyo City University, Kansai University and Ritsumeikan University.
This ranking evaluates universities globally across three main categories: inputs (funding), process (success metrics, facilities, administrative support, and promotional efforts), and output (publications, research quality, and reputation). Among these, OUS excelled in the process category, ranking 15th in Japan, reflecting the university’s high-quality research facilities and strong institutional support for academic activities.
The concept of “Interdisciplinary Science” in this ranking emphasized research conducted collaboratively across multiple academic fields. At OUS, interdisciplinary research is actively promoted through initiatives such as collaborative projects between the veterinary and engineering faculties and other cross-disciplinary research programs within the university.
Recognition Follows THE World University Rankings
In addition to this achievement, OUS was also recognized in the THE World University Rankings 2025, announced on October 9. In this ranking OUS placed globally in the 1501+ range among 2,092 institutions and tied for 63rd place among the 119 Japanese universities.
Note: In THE rankings, "Reporter" refers to universities that provided data for evaluation but were not assigned a specific rank.
