The European Society of Endocrinology (ESE) is delighted to announce the publication of the ESE Curriculum and Training Recommendation in Endocrinology (ESE Curriculum), a significant milestone in standardising postgraduate endocrinology training across Europe.
The ESE Curriculum has been developed by ESE in collaboration with the Section and Board of Endocrinology of the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS). It outlines a six-year training programme, which includes one to three years of general internal medicine followed by three to five years of specialised training in endocrinology. It also specifies the skills and behaviours expected from an endocrinologist and provides recommendations on the duration and structure of training, the governance of training, including assessment, and the requirements for trainers and training centres. The ESE Curriculum replaces the previous curricula formulated by ESE (last updated in 2019) and the UEMS Training Requirement (published in 2018).
Anton Luger, representative of the ESE Council of Affiliated Societies (ECAS), said: “The aim of the new ESE curriculum is not to be imposed over established national curricula, but it may complement them by offering a comprehensive training framework. The overall goal is to harmonise training in endocrinology and, thereby, to contribute to best care of patients with endocrine diseases across Europe, and to facilitate professional mobility.”
The ESE Curriculum will be published in the European Journal of Endocrinology (EJE) Volume 191 Issue 5 November 2024 and is accompanied by an Invited Commentary from EJE Editor-in-Chief, Felix Beuschlein. The full curriculum is also available for download via the ESE website here.
Felix Beuschlein commented: “The curriculum's emphasis on lifelong learning and professionalism is vital in the rapidly evolving field of endocrinology. The inclusion of non-technical skills, such as communication and leadership, complements trainees for roles as both clinicians and leaders in healthcare settings.
“One of the significant advantages of the curriculum is its potential to facilitate professional mobility across Europe. By harmonising training standards, endocrinologists trained under this curriculum can have their qualifications recognised across EU countries, fostering greater collaboration and knowledge exchange.”
The new ESE Curriculum was ratified by the ESE Executive Committee and by the General Assembly of the UEMS Section and Board of Endocrinology and has been endorsed by 48 members of the ESE Council of Affiliated Societies (ECAS).
The revision of the ESE Curriculum began in 2023 and was led by former ESE Education Committee Chair Mirjam Christ-Crain and the former President of the UEMS Section and Board of Endocrinology (SBE) Maeve Durkan, together with ESE Scientific Programmes Project Manager Pedro Marques and Anton Luger as former representative of the ESE Council of Affiliated Societies (ECAS).
