To what extent are universities around the world committed to interdisciplinary, networked scientific work? The THE Interdisciplinary Ranking, which was published for the first time on November 21, 2024 by THE in collaboration with Schmidt Science, examines this question. The University of Stuttgart ranks 82nd in the international comparison - out of a total of 749 universities from 92 countries listed. It ranked second in the national comparison within Germany.

“This is a great achievement,” says a delighted Prof. Manfred Bischoff, Vice Rector for Research and Sustainable Development at the University of Stuttgart. "Interdisciplinary collaboration has been deeply rooted at our university for many years and is a cornerstone of its strategic vision, known as the 'Stuttgart Way'. After all, the complex challenges of our time can only be mastered jointly, in cooperation with a wide range of disciplines. The excellent result in the first edition of this ranking confirms our efforts.”

About the ranking

The interdisciplinary performance of universities is evaluated based on three key parameters across the research project lifecycle: Input or funding (19%), Process (including success measures, facilities, administrative support, and funding) (16%), and Output (publications, research quality, and reputation) (65%).
