Kaya advancing AI literacy

Grant and Award Announcement

George Mason University

Erdogan Kaya, Assistant Professor, College of Education and Human Development (CEHD), received funding for the project: “EducateAI DCL: Cultivating Artificial Intelligence Literacy through Linguistically Inclusive Integrated Elementary Curriculum via Educational Robotics.”

He and his colleagues aim to develop a linguistically inclusive integrated Artificial Intelligence (AI) curriculum that specifically supports emergent multilingual learners (EMLs), using educational robotics to teach AI concepts within science and engineering contexts.

The curriculum will be designed for students in grades 4-5, with a particular focus on making AI education accessible to EMLs and preparing all students for AI-intensive careers from an early age.

Kaya and his team will investigate how the integrated curriculum impacts students’ understanding of AI concepts and practices, as well as their attitudes towards AI. The project will also explore changes in teachers’ AI teaching efficacy beliefs and their perceptions of teaching EMLs.

It is a $999,999 National Science Foundation (NSF) CSforALL grant that will impact 25 elementary teachers and more than 600 students. Funding began in Oct. 2024 and will end in late Sept. 2027.
