The Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine (JRSM) has been ranked as one of the world’s top ten general medicine journals for the first time.
Being placed tenth out of 329 ‘general and internal medicine’ titles in Clarivate’s 2023 Journal Citation Reports (JCR), this is JRSM’s highest ever ranking to date, having risen yearly since being rated 28th out of 160 titles in 2018.
The independent JRC ranks journals by their ‘Impact Factor’, calculated by reviewing the number of citable articles for each journal. JRSM now has an Impact Factor of 16.3, a significant increase from its 2018 figure of 3.538.
Professor Kamran Abbasi, Editor in Chief of JRSM and JRSM Open, said:
"It's good to see JRSM ranked in the top ten of the world's general medical journals. It is a remarkable achievement for a monthly society journal. I'm grateful to our readers, authors, peer reviewers, and production staff for their hard work, as well as for the support we receive from SAGE, our publisher.
“JRSM articles have a reputation for being independent and challenging conventional thinking, and I'm particularly delighted that the quality of research papers that we publish continues to improve. This is reflected in our readership data and citations. JRSM's success is a testament to RSM's stewardship of the journal, and the editorial independence that the editor has always enjoyed."
Michele Acton, Chief Executive of the Royal Society of Medicine, said:
“That JRSM has been ranked as a top ten journal in the general medical field is excellent news and a ringing endorsement of the hard work of so many.
“Our leading journal is a key plank of the Royal Society of Medicine’s charitable vision to improve outcomes for patients through continuous learning for healthcare professionals.
“Our members will be rightly proud of their journal, and its open-source sister publication JRSM Open. I wish hearty congratulations to Professor Abbasi and the whole team.”
This result follows a correction by Clarivate on their original ranking, which was released in June 2024.
