The next United Nations Biodiversity Conference, which is to be held from 21 October to 1 November 2024, will encompass the Sixteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP16), the Eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, and the Fifth meeting of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization.

During COP16, at the EU Pavilion, the EU-funded projects CO-OP4CBD, BioAgora, RESPIN, and Biodiversa+ will organise two joint side events which will aim to shed light on how the Science-Policy Interface (SPI) can effectively support the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KM-GBF) and contribute to the addressing of critical biodiversity challenges related to health and climate change. The topic of the events is highly relevant to protecting biodiversity as it comes at a time when the need for an efficient dialogue between scientific research and political decision-making is pivotal for achieving optimal evidence-based policies, enabling effective conservation strategies and actions.

Side Event 1: Discussion on the Science-Policy Interface (SPI) Landscape & the Role of SPIs in Supporting the Implementation and Monitoring of the KM-GBF

  • Date: 25 October 2024
  • Time: 15:30 - 17:00 (UTC-5)
  • Location: EU Pavilion, COP16, Cali, Colombia

This event will explore how SPIs can effectively integrate scientific research into policy frameworks to ensure the successful implementation and monitoring of the KM-GBF. By enhancing the connection between science and policy, SPIs play a crucial role in ensuring that evidence-based decisions shape the future of biodiversity conservation and restoration efforts.

Side Event 2: Science-Policy Interface Contribution to the Subjects of Biodiversity & Health and Biodiversity & Climate Change

  • Date: 31 October 2024
  • Time: 17:30 - 19:00 (UTC-5)
  • Location: EU Pavilion, COP16, Cali, Colombia

Focusing on the interconnectedness of biodiversity, health, and climate change, this session will highlight the invaluable role of SPIs in addressing these critical global issues. Through targeted discussions, the event will explore how scientific research can inform policies that promote both human and environmental health, as well as mitigate the impacts of climate change on biodiversity.

Both events are expected to attract delegates and attendees of the COP16 summit, including policymakers, researchers, and civil society representatives, and offer a platform for meaningful dialogue.

Find out more information about the upcoming events, the organisers, and research results related to biodiversity policy at the dedicated COP16 webpage created by the CO-OP4CBD project.
