Yao developing language model-powered virtual mathematics classroom

Grant and Award Announcement

George Mason University

Ziyu Yao, Assistant Professor, Computer Science, School of Computing, College of Engineering and Computing (CEC), is developing a virtual mathematics classroom. This is an interdisciplinary project in collaboration with Co-PI Jennifer Suh, Professor, Mathematics Education, College of Education and Human Development (CEHD).

Yao will explore the development of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques, particularly large language models, for creating a virtual classroom platform that supports collaborative learning of mathematical modeling for middle school students.

Through use of the platform, Yao aims to increase the opportunities for students from under-resourced communities to receive effective mathematics education, supporting more equitable learning. She will also use the platform as a lens to understand the opportunities and risks of Generative AI techniques and provide insights for future researchers and educators.

Yao received $578,047 from the National Science Foundation for this project. Funding began in Sept. 2024 and will end in late Aug. 2027.
