OpenHIE, short for Open Health Information Exchange, is a global community of practice dedicated to building an open framework that supports nations in developing country-driven, large-scale HIEs. Its primary goal is to support countries as they strive to improve health outcomes in regions with limited resources through better data sharing. Members of the community work jointly with real-world users to resolve data communication and exchange problems. Many countries leverage OpenHIE’s approaches and reference its technologies and community processes as part of their digital health strategies.

Regenstrief Institute research scientists and staff collaborate with international community members to facilitate strategic community leadership through collaborative practices to strengthen the work of community members and play a critical role in the annual conference. Meeting attendees typically include government officials from various countries, HIE project implementers and technology developers, among many other stakeholders.
