Gingold To Conduct In-Air 3D Modeling

Yotam Gingold, Associate Professor, Computer Science, College of Engineering and Computing (CEC), received funding from the National Science Foundation for the project: “Collaborative Research: HCC: Medium: Untethered3D: In-Air 3D Modeling Using Non-Visual Feedback.”

Gingold and his collaborators aim to: (1) develop accurate, in-air 3D drawing tools; (2) design sonification techniques for non-visual shape perception and editing; and (3) develop verbal 3D shape editing tools and interactions.

If successful, the researchers will develop algorithms and interfaces that provide superhuman abilities to design and perceive digital shapes—without visual feedback.

The researchers hope this work will set the stage for future research on incorporating sound and speech into 3D modeling.

Gingold will receive $719,999 from NSF for this project. Funding will begin in Oct. 2024 and will end in late Sept. 2028.
