Mitochondrial Evaluation Workshop: Bridging Theory and Practice This October in Berlin

The World Mitochondria Society is excited to announce its annual workshop on the Evaluation of Mitochondrial Function, scheduled to take place on October 29, 2024, in Berlin. This workshop will precede the Targeting Mitochondria 2024 Congress and aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the latest advances in mitochondrial research and evaluation.

Why a Mitochondria Continue to Captivate Researchers and Clinicians?

Mitochondria continue to captivate researchers and clinicians with their crucial role in cellular energy production and overall cellular function. Evaluating mitochondrial health is essential for advancing medical research and developing innovative treatments, making this workshop a significant step towards the medicine of tomorrow.

The chairmen of the WMS, Marvin Edeas and Volkmar Weissig, emphasized that mitochondria are dynamic organelles that move, communicate, and alert within the cellular environment. These organelles are present in various localisations. Given this dynamic nature, there is a pressing need for adaptive techniques and methods that align with the inherent dynamics of mitochondria.

Edeas and Weissig pointed out that the behavior of mitochondria in vitro can differ significantly from their behavior in vivo. Therefore, it is critical not to extrapolate in vitro findings directly to in vivo contexts. This underscores the importance of developing and utilizing methodologies that can accurately reflect the complex and dynamic nature of mitochondrial function within living organisms.

The continuous study and evaluation of mitochondrial function are vital for medical advancements. The upcoming workshop and the WMS annual meeting aim to address these challenges by fostering discussions and sharing insights on the latest research, ultimately contributing to the development of future medical innovations.

Workshop Leadership and Expertise

The workshop will be led by Dr. Naig Gueguen from the Mitovasc Institute, Mitolab team, Centre Hospitalier Universitaire d’Angers, Angers, France. Dr. Gueguen's extensive expertise will guide participants through an in-depth investigation of mitochondrial function, dysfunction, and activities. "This workshop provides a unique platform for researchers and clinicians to deepen their understanding of mitochondrial science and to learn innovative diagnostic and therapeutic strategies," stated Dr. Gueguen.

Workshop Aims

The workshop aims to:

  • Advance the comprehension of mitochondria, metabolism, and bioenergetics.
  • Present state-of-the-art technological instruments.
  • Discuss biomarkers and diagnostic methodologies for mitochondrial diseases.
  • Provide practical cases for experiential learning opportunities and insights into mitochondrial research and applications.

What’s on the Agenda?

- Bioenergetics: Analysis methods for mitochondrial function including respiratory chain activity and oxidative metabolism. Technological tools for research in vitro, in vivo, and ex vivo. Discussion covers respiration rates, mitochondrial membrane potential, ATP synthesis, and redox states.

 - Biogenesis, Dynamics, and Mitophagy: Techniques for examining mitochondrial networks and mitophagy.

Practical Insights into Mitochondrial Function

Practical case presentations will offer insights into mitochondrial function in models of longevity and mitochondrial activity in the context of skin aging and skincare. These real-world examples will provide attendees with valuable experiential learning opportunities, enhancing their understanding of mitochondrial research and its applications.

Who should participate?

This workshop is an essential opportunity for researchers, clinicians, and professionals in the field of mitochondrial studies to enhance their knowledge and skills. Participants will benefit from the expertise of Dr. Naig Gueguen and the collaborative environment that promotes discussion and innovation.

Join us in Berlin

We invite all interested parties to join us in Berlin for this pivotal workshop and the subsequent Targeting Mitochondria 2024 Congress. Together, we can bridge the gap between theory and practice, pushing the boundaries of mitochondrial research and its applications in medicine.
