Dr Manel Esteller, the Director of the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute (IJC), ICREA Research Professor, and Chairman of Genetics at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Barcelona, has been selected as the best researcher working in the Genetics field in Spain by the 2024 Edition of the Ranking of Best Scientists of Research.com, a leading academic platform for researchers. Dr Esteller also has been recognized in the #37 position among top 4,000 worldwide scientists studying genetics.
Research.com ranking is based on D-index (Discipline H-index) metric, which only includes papers and citation values for an examined discipline. The ranking only includes leading scientists with D-index of at least 40 for academic publications made in the area of Genetics. This is the third edition of this annual ranking, which aims to give visibility to world leading scientists and highlight their latest work. Dr Esteller was already recognized as the best Genetics researcher in Spain in last year’s edition.
Dr Esteller’s research primarily focuses on the regulation of the activity of the human genome, an area commonly known as “Epigenetics”. The discoveries of Dr Esteller in this field have unveiled the chemical modifications in DNA, RNA and proteins that characterize human diseases, with an emphasis in cancer. Dr Esteller's groundbreaking findings have also contributed to the development of novel companion diagnostics and the approval of first-in-class anti-cancer drugs such as those that target DNA methylation and histone modifications.
