NTU Singapore tops global list of young universities
Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore) has topped this year’s Times Higher Education Young University Rankings again, maintaining its first position from last year.
NTU is the only Singapore university in the rankings which lists the world’s best universities aged 50 years old and younger.
The University’s strong performance was driven by its strengths in teaching and research environment, which take into account NTU’s learning environment and its research volume and institutional reputation. NTU also excelled in its international outlook, industry income and patents, and quality of research, an indicator looking at citation impact, research strength and research influence.
NTU President Professor Ho Teck Hua said: “As a young institution, we have been able to move quickly and make bold decisions to push the frontiers of research and education. NTU’s retention of the top spot in this year’s Times Higher Education Young University Rankings reflects the talent and success of our faculty and students, and our commitment to teaching and research excellence.”
“Through our strong emphasis on interdisciplinary research, international collaborations and industry partnerships, NTU has translated many research solutions into impactful, real-world innovations. NTU’s recent big push in artificial intelligence (AI) education and research is a testament to our agility and adaptability in responding to emerging trends in a fast-paced, AI-driven world,” said Professor Ho.
Mr Phil Baty, Times Higher Education’s chief global affairs officer, said: “NTU’s achievement of being crowned the number one university in the world in Times Higher Education’s Young University Rankings 2024 is absolutely fantastic. It’s all the more special as it has retained this position for the second consecutive year, and it has done this with even more competition, as more universities – 68 more than last year, representing an 11 per cent increase – participated. This continued success bodes very well for NTU and the future of its teaching, research and innovation.”

Recognising that AI is fast becoming a general-purpose technology that will reshape the world, the University launched new AI-centric undergraduate offerings and research initiatives earlier this year. These efforts are spearheaded by the new College of Computing and Data Science, which will train students to be fluent in AI and accelerate interdisciplinary collaboration between computing and other disciplines in NTU.
NTU’s latest academic offerings straddle multiple disciplines in traditional and emerging fields, which are designed to prepare future-ready graduates with interdisciplinary knowledge who can thrive in a competitive global economy.
As a result of the University’s dedication to innovative teaching, scientific breakthroughs and research translations, NTU placed 32nd globally in the latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings released in September 2023. NTU was also ranked 4th in the recent Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings, where it was the youngest university in the top 10.
In a separate ranking of university subjects by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) last month, NTU had 32 subjects ranked in the global top 50. NTU also climbed one spot up to 4th place in the QS Asia University Rankings last year.
This year’s Times Higher Education Young University Rankings ranked a total of 673 universities from 79 countries and regions. It uses the same methodology as Times Higher Education’s World University Rankings, which assesses institutions on teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. The weightings are recalibrated to reflect the profile of missions of young universities.
