[Boston, MA—December 21, 2023] Joe Martucci of Lee Enterprise/The Press of Atlantic City and Kylee Miller of CBS Detroit are the first to earn the American Meteorological Society’s Certified Digital Meteorologist (CDM) designation. This professional recognition is granted to digital meteorologists who meet established criteria for scientific competence and effective communication skills in their weather content.
Currently, it can be difficult for members of the public to discern which sources of weather-related online/app content are presenting information based on evidence and expertise. To earn the CDM, candidates must hold a degree in meteorology or equivalent from an accredited college or university, pass a rigorous written examination, and have samples of their work reviewed by the Board of Digital Meteorologists. The public can have added confidence in the quality and reliability of weather content presented by meteorologists approved by the Society.
“As digital media continues to grow as a source for weather and climate information, I'm so excited for the AMS to introduce this new certification program. It gives digital meteorologists a way to distinguish themselves and their work in a crowded field, and it recognizes the academic and professional standards of our Society's members online," says Erica Grow Cei, who led the ad hoc committee to develop the certification. She will oversee the program as the incoming AMS Commissioner of Professional Affairs.
In addition to the initial educational and test requirements, CDMs must earn professional development points to maintain their certification. These points can be earned by attending scientific seminars or meetings and similar activities.
