Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore) is launching a new Executive Master of Science in Sustainability Management programme to equip executives and professionals with the knowledge, skills, and tools to respond to sustainability challenges and implement sustainable practices in organisations as Singapore transitions to a green economy.
Offered by the Nanyang Business School (NBS) at NTU Singapore from August 2024, the specialised graduate business degree programme will cover a wide range of topics at the intersection of business and the environment, such as climate change and sustainable finance.
The programme was launched today at the Indo-Pacific Business Summit organised by the Embassy of Sweden, Singapore and the Swedish Chamber of Commerce Singapore.
At the event, NTU NBS also signed a Letter of Intent with the Stockholm School of Economics (SSE) to develop exchange and research activities, including exploring opportunities for SSE to contribute to the delivery of academic activities for the new Executive Master of Science programme.
The new programme aims to develop a pipeline of sustainability talents and leaders who can steer business operations towards sustainability. This is in line with the Singapore Green Plan 2030, which encourages businesses to integrate sustainability into business decisions, find more sustainable ways to operate, and embrace green opportunities.
Professor Ling San, NTU’s Deputy President and Provost, said: “As more companies recognise the importance of operating within the green economy and the need to implement new practices that address climate change implications, there is a growing demand for sustainability management expertise to help companies make the transition. This new Executive Master of Science programme by NTU’s Nanyang Business School will help professionals develop a comprehensive understanding of sustainability in the business context, and equip them with the right tools and frameworks to navigate the complex sustainability landscape.”
The launch of the new Executive Master of Science in Sustainability Management is also in line with the NTU 2025 strategic plan, which strives to promote lifelong learning through its education pillar.
A graduate programme for aspiring sustainability leaders
The Executive Master of Science in Sustainability Management programme features an interdisciplinary curriculum with courses spanning four areas: Climate and Environment; Business and Management; Strategy and Innovation; and Technology and Energy. These courses will be taught by faculty across NTU’s colleges and autonomous institutes, as well as industry experts.
A compulsory component of the programme is an integrated capstone, in which participants work on projects that could benefit their organisations, such as developing sustainable investment products or working on a net zero carbon emissions roadmap. Participants will be guided formally by a faculty member or an industry expert on this project.
The programme is also designed to be a ‘stackable’ learning pathway. Participants who have attained the FlexiMasters Certificate in Sustainability Business Ecosystems at NTU can apply to transfer their credits towards the Executive Master of Science programme.
To enrol, applicants should have an undergraduate degree and have at least 10 years of work experience. Applicants will also be assessed by their professional achievements and passion in pursuing a career that spans business and the environment.
Applicants without an undergraduate degree but who have achieved satisfactory results in the FlexiMasters in Sustainability Business Ecosystems are encouraged to apply for the programme.
NBS and SSE to deepen cooperation
As part of a Letter of Intent between NTU’s Nanyang Business School (NBS) and the Stockholm School of Economics (SSE), a visiting faculty member from SSE will teach an elective or co-teach a module for the new Executive Masters programme.
The two Schools are also exploring the possibility of having SSE host an immersion experience for this programme.
The agreement, inked by Professor Christina Soh, NBS Dean and Professor Magnus Mähring, Director, House of Innovation at SSE, outlines the two Schools’ plans to encourage student and faculty exchanges, as well as further collaboration on research.
The Schools will also organise an online research workshop centred around the themes of innovation and sustainability.
