Darwin Serkland is developing novel microscopic semiconductor lasers for use in next-generation atomic clocks at Sandia National Laboratories. Needle probes positioned under a microscope drive 2 milliamps of current into a laser diode, which produces almost 1 milliwatt of monochromatic light at a wavelength of 894 nanometers. The laser diode shown here is a hundred times smaller than a grain of salt.
