Photographs of predominant thermophilic fungal strains with and without the melanin precursor (IMAGE)
Caption
On the left, two conidia of the fungal strains with (A) and without (B) the melanin precursor are seen, with distinct lipids and cell walls. On the right were mycelia with (C) and without (D) the melanin precursor, with distinct mitochondria (red) and black tight bodies (blue). The disappearance of mitochondrial cristae and the rupture of outer mitochondrial membrane in the mutant without the melanin precursor were seen (D). These two strains suggests that the fungus melanin precursor functions as a ferroptosis defensive chemical. Photo credit: Xuemei NIU.
