After birth, GLA activates RXR in the postnatal cardiomyocytes. This results in the activation of genetic programs that ensure that the cardiomyocyte mitochondria mature and use lipids as the energy source for the generation of ATP. This metabolic adaptation makes sure that the myocardium is provided with enough energy to sustain the heartbeat outside the womb, thus ensuring postnatal survival.
