Kate Lyons stands in Elephant Hall at the University of Nebraska State Museum. Behind her looms Archie, the largest Columbian mammoth fossil in the world. Like many other massive island inhabitants, a now-extinct ancestor of the Columbian mammoth shrank — evolving from roughly 20,000 pounds to 2,000 — while on California’s Channel Islands.
