PHB – scaffold for probiotic biofilm formation (IMAGE)
Caption
The PHB surface contributes to its contact area with the intestinal microenvironment and provides the possibility of adhesion. The porous structure of PHB provides a natural scaffold of biofilm formation for L. johnsonii, causing considerable colonization and strengthened probiotic effect of L. johnsonii. Coating with biofilms can significantly protect L. johnsonii from the penetration of bile salts and acidic insults and effectively promote its resistance and adherence in the gut, thus L. johnsonii can proliferate in abundance and function for a long time to re-shape the local microbial ecosystem.
