D4治療減少大腦兩個不同區域星形膠質細胞的增生和活化。研究項目把毛果芸香堿注射到小鼠腹腔內以誘發癲癇發作，在誘發癲癇發作7天後，研究人員觀察到星形膠質細胞數量逐漸增加（紅色的是經GFAP染色的星形膠質細胞；藍色的是經DAPI染色的所有細胞核）。在誘發癲癇發作之前或之後，單次注射新型半通道拮抗劑D4，能顯著抑制星形膠質細胞增生，從而減少神經炎症。
