fucoxanthin absorption (IMAGE)
Caption
In the brown-colored diatoms, fucoxanthin absorbs green light and transfers the energy to photosynthetic chlorophylls that emit part of this energy as red fluorescent light (right). Cells of the green mutant lack fucoxanthin and show a much weaker chlorophyll fluorescence in green light (left), demonstrating the importance of fucoxanthin for light harvesting.
