L-Shape Elastomer Bending Toward Light (IMAGE) University of Pittsburgh Caption In the relaxed state, the nematic director is oriented vertically within the L-shaped structure. When it is exposed to ultraviolet light, the side of the 'stem' facing the light will contract, resulting in light-seeking behavior. Eventually, this bending will expose the top arm of the L to the light as well. Because of the bending of the stem, this arm will be reoriented relative to the light and will display light-avoiding bending.
