T-Shape Elastomer Takes a Bow (IMAGE) University of Pittsburgh Caption In the relaxed state, the nematic director is oriented vertically within the T-shaped structure. Contraction along this axis causes the stem of the T-shape to bend towards an ultraviolet light source, while the corresponding expansion perpendicular to the director results in the arms bending away from the light at the same time. As the stem bends, different faces of the arms are exposed to the light, and the direction of their light-avoiding bending changes.
