Research by KU Leuven, the Royal Museum for Central Africa, and ULB has shown that deforestation and population growth have greatly impacted landslide risk in the Kivu Rift. The image shows landslides near a gold mine in Luhwinja in eastern DR Congo. The miners’ village is at the foot of the largest landslide.
