Dem3 (IMAGE) University of Georgia Caption The Cold Springs site, located about 75 miles east of Atlanta, was partially submerged beneath what is now Lake Oconee when the Oconee River was dammed in the 1970s. Since the site’s excavation nearly 50 years ago, Cold Springs’ artifacts had been archived in the Laboratory of Archaeology’s collections until the UGA team reexamined them with new interest and new technologies.
