The axolotl, or Mexican salamander (Ambystoma mexicanum), is nature's champion of regeneration. Prayag Murawala, Ph.D., of the MDI Biological Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine, is leading the effort to establish the axolotl as a laboratory model for the study of human regeneration.
