Mike Shapiro, University of Utah (1 of 2) (IMAGE) University of Utah Caption University of Utah biologist Mike Shapiro works at 3 a.m. to cross-breed stickleback fish in an impromptu laboratory he set up in a motel room in Canada's Northwest Territories, where he collects some of the fish. Shapiro is publishing a new study showing that two different genes were responsible for the loss of the pelvis in two different species of sticklebacks. That was a surprise because earlier studies indicated the same genes would cause the same changes in the two related species.
