Cell Cycle (IMAGE) Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology Caption This is a cell cycle. The G1 phase is preparatory to cell division. During this phase, the cell's components, except its DNA, are duplicated. In the S phase, the DNA is 'copied' -- molecular machinery replicates daughter DNA using the original strand as a template. G2 is the final stage before division, or mitosis (M), begins. When in G1, the cell may exit the cycle and enter a resting state called the G0 phase, meaning that the division has stopped.
