Charles Robertson, a professor of biology and Greek at Blackburn College in Carlinville, Ill., 50 miles northeast of St. Louis, meticulously recorded the interactions of insects and flowering plants within a 10-mile radius of Carlinville at the turn of the century. The data he collected provides a baseline from which changes in plant-pollinator networks can be measured.
