将空棘鱼类排除在外的扇鳍鱼类冠群主要包括肺鱼类和四足动物，中国肉鳍鱼类的化石显示该类群的起源与快速分化主要发生在晚志留世-早泥盆世洛赫考夫期期间。肺鱼形类杨氏鱼(Youngolepis)是扇鳍鱼类冠群及肉鳍鱼类冠群最古老的代表，而斑鳞鱼(Psarolepis)、鬼鱼(Guiyu)则代表肉鳍鱼类干群的最早化石记录。
