上皮組織を構成する上皮細胞は頂端極性と平面内細胞極性というふたつの細胞極性を有します。特に、平面内細胞極性は近－遠位軸に沿った細胞の形態や秩序を持った細胞の配列に必須です。体幹から近い方を近位、遠い方を遠位といいます。
