Infant Universe (IMAGE) University of Chicago Caption Scientists created this detailed, all-sky picture of the infant universe from nine years of data from the orbiting Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe. The image reveals 13.77 billion year old temperature fluctuations -- shown as color differences -- that correspond to the seeds that grew to become the galaxies. Physicists now are using clouds of ultracold atoms in a vacuum chamber to simulate the growth of structure in the early universe.
