The average elevation of the 1,960 towns examined was 12,500 feet (3,810 meters) above sea level and only 23 percent had a Han Chinese name. The number of Tibetan town names (dotted line) does not drop off until 17,000 feet (5,200 meters) above sea level after peaking at 14,760 feet (4,500 meters) (vertical red line).
