Gastric Proton Pump, H+,K+-ATPase (IMAGE) Nagoya University Caption The gastric proton pump, also known as H+,K+-ATPase, is expressed on the surface of the stomach to secrete the gastric acid indispensable for digestion of proteins in food. However, too much acid secretion induces ulcers. The gastric proton pump uptakes protons from the neutral cytoplasm (pH 7) to the acidic milieu of the stomach (pH 1) driven by ATP as an energy source. Thus, it is an important drug target for acid-related diseases.
