NMDA 3 (IMAGE) Rice University Caption The four subunits of NMDA receptor proteins can each have many states that regulate which electrical signals pass through the membrane of a nerve cell. The subunits activate when they bind both glutamate and glycine neurotransmitter ligands and trigger the signaling pathway that allows positively charged ions to pass into the cell.
