Early Protoypes of New Game Controller (IMAGE) University of Utah Caption Earlier prototypes of a new kind of game controller by University of Utah mechanical engineer William Provancher had handles so researchers could study the effect of placing thumbs straight on the controller's joysticks or at an angle, as is the case with existing Xbox and PlayStation controllers. Their study found gamers were just as accurate either way in interpreting the direction of tugs on the thumb tips by the new controller's touch-feedback feature.
