Cases Uncovered by Wireless Sensor Network (IMAGE)
Caption
Clinical deterioration was detected in three patients during the trial of a prototype wireless vital-sign network. One patient suffered from bradycardia (low heart rate). The patient’s initial heart rate was 55 beats per minute, but it dropped to 35 beats per minute about two hours before the patient was admitted to the ICU (top). A second patient was discovered to be suffering from sleep apnea, a sleep disorder during which a person intermittently stops breathing. The traces show that this patient’s oxygen saturation levels dropped below 80 percent during episodes of apnea (middle, green circles). A third patient suffered from pulmonary edema, or the buildup of fluid in the air sacs of the lungs. The trace for this patient, who required intubation and was transferred to the ICU, shows correlated increases in heart rate and decreases in oxygenation (bottom, green circles.)
