Experimental Chamber (IMAGE) University of Washington Caption An experimental chamber is used to study how microorganisms at the Lost City hydrothermal vents interact with rock that underlies the field. The actively venting carbonate chimneys host dense communities of microorganisms. The red dots below the chamber, spaced four inches (10 centimeters) apart, are created by lasers on a submersible near the vents. Credit D.
