The malaria sporozoite, tagged with fluorescent dye in this image, contains the non-nuclear form of a poly(A)-binding protein on its surface. The unexpected role of this protein on the infectious form of the malaria parasite is not yet clear but may provide an opportunity for the parasite to interact with its mosquito vector or its human host through RNA.
