Healthy female (left) and male (right) Marchantia polymorpha liverworts develop distinctive umbrella-shaped structures when they are ready to reproduce. Researchers at the University of Tokyo and their colleagues around Japan investigated the genetic mechanisms controlling the switch from growth to reproduction.
