New Mexico's Las Conchas Fire (IMAGE) University of Arizona Caption This picture shows the aftermath of the Las Conchas fire, which burned in the Jemez Mountains of New Mexico in June and July of 2011. The dead trees in the foreground are ponderosa pine that were killed by the fire. The house on the cliff in the middle of the picture survived the fire by chance. The foundation of another home that burned can be seen in the foreground in the lower left, just behind some blackened trees. Credit Thomas W. Swetnam/UA Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research.
