Cell Nuclei Isolated from the Neurons of Two Wasps (IMAGE)
Caption
The method allows for the counting of individual nuclei sampled from a homogenized insect brain, shown here for two species included in this study, Augochlorella, a sweat bee, and Polistes, a paper wasp. Stained blue, the nuclei can be counted using a subdivided microscope slide commonly used in physicians' offices to count blood cells. The sweat bee turned out to have a higher density of brain cells than even some vertebrate species.
