Coast of Maine (IMAGE)
Caption
Scattered dark patches of Porphyra umbilicalis in the upper intertidal zone of Acadia National Park at Schoodic Point, Maine, on a calm, sunny day that exposed this ubiquitous North Atlantic red alga to high light and drying stresses. The genome project just completed helps to explain how the alga can survive the intense visible and UV light and desiccation to only a few percent of its water content when immersed by seawater at high tide.
